Rare WWI Armistice & Peace Commemorative Mug – 1918–1919 – Sir David Beatty Historic Signal – British Pottery Federation – Made in England Event commemorated: End of World War I & signing of peace Dates referenced: 1914–1919 (War & Peace) Historic quotation: Admiral Sir David Beatty, Nov. 21st 1918 Material: Glazed earthenware with gilt detailing Description This exceptional early 20th-century commemorative mug was produced to celebrate the end of the First World War and the signing of peace in 1919, marking one of the most significant moments in modern history. One side features a richly coloured patriotic scene showing Britannia seated before a globe marked “Peace”, with a dove of peace in flight above and the flags of the Allied nations proudly displayed behind her, including Britain, France, the United States and others. Along the banner beneath appear the words: “Liberty – Justice – Truth – Honour” A powerful period message symbolising the Allied victory. The reverse displays a beautifully framed historic inscription titled: Sir David Beatty’s Historic Signal Quoting the famous order given following Germany’s surrender: “The German flag is to be hauled down at sunset today, and is not to be hoisted again without permission.” Nov. 21st, 1918 Below this are key historic dates: • War declared against Germany – August 4th, 1914 • General Armistice signed – November 11th, 1918 • Peace signed – June 28th, 1919 The mug also includes a personalised presentation inscription: “Church Gresley – 1919”, suggesting it was issued locally to commemorate peace celebrations — a lovely and increasingly rare survival. Condition Good antique condition for over 100 years old. • Age-related crazing to glaze (completely normal and expected) • Some surface wear and firing imperfections • Gilt rim worn in places from age • No major cracks or repairs observed Overall extremely well preserved for a WWI commemorative piece.
